Thanks to it's fatty acid content, coconut oil is a high-speed energy supplement for horses. Coconut oil is energy dense and yields about 2 times more energy than starch or protein.

It also improves gut gealth - coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that are easier to digest, absorb and convert to energy than the traditionally used vegetable oils. It's been reported to assist with ulcers, acidosis, colic and dysbiosis and is particularly helpful for horses on a grain-based feed.

Coconut oil is very useful for weight loss. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and endocrine system. Further, it increases the body’s metabolic rate by removing stress on the pancreas, thereby burning more energy and helping obese and overweight to lose the weight.

Coconut oil composes about 90 % of saturated fats. The majority of saturated fats are the medium-chain triglycerides (MCT's) of which lauric acid being the dominant fatty acid. MCT's absorb passively and enter the blood system inside the gut without any mediation of transport channels. Several research studies suggest that these fats help reach early satiety and increase blood HDL/total cholesterol levels.

Lauric acid and other MCT's absorb passively into the blood stream and thus save energy and bring a fresh sense of satiety. When consumed in moderation over a period, saturated fats, mainly medium-chain triglycerides may help control body weight and may bring a reduction in risk of atherosclerosis. The cold-pressed oil contains a small amount of vitamin-E and other tocopherols.

Coconut oil improves immunity against a host of infections and diseases. Coconut oil strengthens the immune system because it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.
